One-time Mac licenses

Vokalu vs VoiceInk: one Mac license, or every computer you use.

The short answer

If you only dictate on an Apple silicon Mac and want to pay once, VoiceInk is a strong choice: it’s open source and transcribes on your Mac. Vokalu is the option when you also work on Windows or an Intel Mac, or want bot-free meeting notes in the same app.

When VoiceInk is worth your attention

VoiceInk makes a lot of sense on an Apple silicon Mac: one payment covers it, your voice stays on the machine, and you can read the source. If that describes all of your computers, it’s hard to beat on cost over a few years.

When Vokalu fits

Vokalu fits when one of your computers runs Windows, or your Mac is an Intel model VoiceInk doesn’t support. The same shortcut and settings work on both, offline dictation in Private mode is free on both, and Notes writes up meetings without a bot.

Run a trial that tells you something

If you have both computers, dictate the same three messages on your Mac in VoiceInk and on your PC in Vokalu’s Private mode. Compare names, numbers and corrections. Then decide whether one tool everywhere matters to you.

Keep track of the time from starting a dictation to having text you would actually send. Include corrections. A fast transcript that needs two minutes of editing may be a worse fit than a slower first result you can use immediately. That is a test to run yourself, not a performance claim about either product.

What this comparison does not establish

We have not run a controlled accuracy or latency benchmark between these products. Published features can change, and privacy requirements depend on the plan and configuration. Review the vendor’s terms for sensitive work. This page is written by Vokalu, not endorsed by VoiceInk.

Questions worth asking

Is there a VoiceInk for Windows?

VoiceInk’s site lists only macOS (Apple silicon, macOS 14.4 or later) and iOS, as of October 26, 2026. On Windows, Vokalu’s Private mode gives you on-device dictation for free, and its cloud dictation costs 1.5¢ to 2¢ per minute.
