When Monologue is worth your attention
Monologue is the better candidate if you want dictation on your iPhone and Apple Watch as well as your Mac, under one subscription. Vokalu has no phone app.
When Vokalu fits
Vokalu makes sense if you work on a Windows PC, or switch between a PC and a Mac. At 2¢ a minute, $15 buys 750 minutes of formatted dictation, so lighter months cost less than the subscription, and quiet weeks cost nothing.
Run a trial that tells you something
Add up a normal week of dictation minutes. Under about 175 minutes a week (750 a month), Vokalu’s formatted dictation costs less than Monologue Pro’s monthly price. Above that, or if you need the phone, Monologue may be the better deal.
Keep track of the time from starting a dictation to having text you would actually send. Include corrections. A fast transcript that needs two minutes of editing may be a worse fit than a slower first result you can use immediately. That is a test to run yourself, not a performance claim about either product.
