Vokalu vs Apple Dictation: start with what your Mac already has.
The short answer
Apple Dictation is free, already on your Mac, and fine for short messages. Vokalu adds cleanup of fillers and self-corrections, formatting for the app you’re in, voice commands to rewrite text, snippets and bot-free meeting notes. Try it if you keep editing what Apple Dictation types.
| What matters | Vokalu | Apple Dictation |

When Apple Dictation is worth your attention
Keep Apple Dictation if it already does the job. For a quick text or a search, it’s free, it’s built in, and nothing else needs installing.
When Vokalu fits
Try Vokalu if you regularly delete “um”s, fix a sentence you restarted, or reformat what you said into an email or a prompt. Those edits are the honest comparison, not recognition alone.
Run a trial that tells you something
Dictate the same three messages with Apple Dictation and Vokalu, including one where you correct yourself mid-sentence. Count the edits each needs before you’d send it.
Keep track of the time from starting a dictation to having text you would actually send. Include corrections. A fast transcript that needs two minutes of editing may be a worse fit than a slower first result you can use immediately. That is a test to run yourself, not a performance claim about either product.
What this comparison does not establish
We have not run a controlled accuracy or latency benchmark between these products. Published features can change, and privacy requirements depend on the plan and configuration. Review the vendor’s terms for sensitive work. This page is written by Vokalu, not endorsed by Apple Dictation.
Questions worth asking
Does Apple Dictation work offline?
Partly. Apple says to check Keyboard settings to see whether dictation is processed on your Mac, and its newer on-device model is English-only on M3 or later Macs with at least 12 GB of memory. Vokalu’s Private mode runs offline on Apple silicon and Intel Macs on macOS 13+.
