A dictation app that stays out of the way.
Vokalu lives in your system tray, with a small dictation pill when you speak. Dictation, selected-text rewriting, snippets, Private mode, reading aloud and bot-free meeting notes fit into the same app. Start with 75¢ welcome credit plus 25¢ in your first week, then pay per minute of speech. The weekly free allowance ends when you first purchase credit. See pricing and free-plan details.
Run the installer.
It’s code-signed, so Windows shows Dennis Kaczmarowski as the verified publisher. If a prompt ever names a different publisher, don’t run it.
Sign in and pick your microphone.
Create an account with your email in the app. Choose your microphone and check your shortcut in Settings.
Speak into your first message.
Click into a text field. Hold Ctrl + Win, speak, and release. Vokalu waits in the system tray until you need it again.
More than Win + H.
Windows already includes voice typing, and it’s a good first test. Vokalu is for when you keep fixing what it typed: it drops the “um”s, follows “three… actually, four,” lays out emails and AI prompts for the app you’re in, and learns the names you correct. Compare Vokalu with Windows voice typing, or read what’s actually free on Windows.
Light on the PC we tested.

Offline when you choose.
Private mode recognizes speech on your PC. Use it everywhere, or only in apps you mark private, and keep fast cloud dictation for the rest. Plain on-device dictation is free. How Private mode works.
Only on Windows, for now.
Say “Vokalu, read this” to hear selected text or a page read aloud. Say everything a form needs, then “Vokalu, fill the form.” Vokalu also learns your writing habits from your edits and can mute other audio while you dictate.
Coming from Dragon?
If you used Dragon mainly to write, Vokalu needs no voice training and no license. If you rely on macros and controlling the PC by voice, Dragon is still the deeper tool. Vokalu vs Dragon, side by side.
Questions worth asking
Which versions of Windows does Vokalu support?
Windows 10 and Windows 11. The installer is about 6 MB, code-signed, and the app updates itself. Its window uses the web view built into Windows instead of bundling a browser.
What is the Windows dictation shortcut?
Hold Ctrl + Win, speak, then release to insert text at your cursor. Add Space (Ctrl + Win + Space) for hands-free dictation. Select text and hold Ctrl + Win + Alt to rewrite it with Command Mode. You can change every shortcut in Settings.
Is Vokalu better than Windows voice typing (Win + H)?
It depends on how much you edit afterwards. Win + H is free and fine for an occasional sentence. Vokalu removes filler, applies mid-sentence corrections, formats for the app you’re in, and learns names you correct. Try both on the same three messages and count the fixes.
Does Vokalu work offline on Windows?
Yes, with Private mode. Download a speech model once in Settings (about 290 MB or 970 MB) and speech is recognized on your PC, with no internet. On-device dictation without AI formatting is free.
