Vokalu vs Dragon: dictation without the license or the training.
The short answer
Stay with Dragon if you rely on custom voice commands, macros or controlling Windows by voice. If you mostly dictate emails, documents, messages and AI prompts, Vokalu is a lighter way to do it on Windows and Mac: no voice training, filler and corrections cleaned up for you, and per-minute pricing instead of a license.
| What matters | Vokalu | Dragon Professional |

When Dragon Professional is worth your attention
Dragon is still the deeper tool for running Windows by voice: custom commands, macros that chain several steps, and boilerplate inserted with a phrase. Organizations that deploy shared vocabularies through Nuance’s management tools have a reason to stay too. If you need hands-free PC control for free, try Windows 11 voice access.
When Vokalu fits
Vokalu is for people who bought Dragon to write, not to drive the PC. Hold Ctrl + Win, talk the way you normally would, and get punctuated text with the “um”s and false starts removed. There is no voice profile to train. Private mode recognizes speech on your computer, free, when you need to work offline.
Run a trial that tells you something
Dictate a page you would normally write in Dragon, with the names and numbers you use. Count the corrections. Then list the voice commands you used last week; if most are macros or PC control, Vokalu will not cover them.
Keep track of the time from starting a dictation to having text you would actually send. Include corrections. A fast transcript that needs two minutes of editing may be a worse fit than a slower first result you can use immediately. That is a test to run yourself, not a performance claim about either product.
What this comparison does not establish
We have not run a controlled accuracy or latency benchmark between these products. Published features can change, and privacy requirements depend on the plan and configuration. Review the vendor’s terms for sensitive work. This page is written by Vokalu, not endorsed by Dragon Professional.
Questions worth asking
Is Vokalu a replacement for Dragon NaturallySpeaking?
For dictating text, often yes: emails, documents, notes, chat and AI prompts in any Windows or Mac app. Vokalu does not replace Dragon’s full voice control of the PC or its custom macros. For those, Dragon Professional or Windows voice access is the better fit.
