Private mode runs a speech model on your own computer, so your voice never leaves it. It works on a plane, on bad Wi-Fi, and in the apps where you’d rather not send anything anywhere: password managers, health, legal, HR. Use it everywhere, or only in apps you mark private, and keep fast cloud dictation for the rest.

Download a speech model once

In Settings › Private mode, choose Fast (about 290 MB) or Accurate (about 970 MB). It’s verified before it’s used.

Choose where it applies

Always, or only in the apps you list, such as “1password” or your notes app. A Private badge appears on the pill when speech stays on your computer.

Dictate as usual

Hold Control + Option on Mac or Ctrl + Win on Windows and talk. If you lose your connection during cloud dictation, Vokalu uses the model instead of losing your words.

Questions worth asking

Is Private mode really free?

Yes. When speech is recognized on your computer and nothing is formatted by our servers, there’s no charge. If you choose AI formatting, the text (never audio) is formatted for 0.5¢ per minute.
