Wispr Flow alternatives: pick by the reason you’re switching
Leaving Wispr Flow over price, memory use, offline needs or your phone? The alternatives that fit each reason, with prices and platforms checked October 15, 2026.
People rarely leave a dictation app over one missing feature. They leave because the subscription renewed for a month they barely used it, the app feels heavy on a work laptop, their audio has to stay on the machine, or they need it on their phone.
Pick an alternative by the reason you’re leaving. A cheaper app that fails your actual reason is not an upgrade. Prices and platforms below were checked on each vendor’s site on October 15, 2026. We make Vokalu, one of the options, and we say where it doesn’t fit.
First, what you’d be leaving
Wispr Flow’s pricing page lists a free plan with 2,000 words a week on desktop and 1,000 on mobile, and Pro at $15 per user per month, or $12 billed annually. It runs on Mac, Windows, iOS and Android, and its Notetaker is listed for Mac and Windows.
That is a strong package. If the free plan covers you and you dictate on your phone, you may not need to switch at all.
If the subscription is the problem
A subscription makes sense when you dictate every day. It feels wasteful when you dictate in bursts: a heavy week of writing, then nothing for two.
- Vokalu charges per minute of speech: 1.5¢ for plain dictation, 2¢ with formatting. At 2¢, Wispr Pro’s $15 buys 750 minutes. Speak less than that in a month and per-minute costs less; speak more and the flat fee wins on price. There is no plan to cancel. Vokalu vs Wispr Flow.
- Aqua Voice keeps a subscription at a lower price: Pro is $10 a month, or $8 billed annually. Vokalu vs Aqua Voice.
- Willow lists Pro at $15 a month, or $12 with annual billing, but its free plan includes unlimited use of a lighter model. Check whether that model is good enough for your writing. Vokalu vs Willow.

If it feels heavy on your computer
We measured this, on one Mac and one Windows PC. With the windows closed, Vokalu averaged 110 MB of background memory against 999 MB for Wispr Flow on an M3 MacBook Air, and 119 MB against 569 MB on Windows. The full resource test lists the versions, methods and limits: one machine per platform, one run per scenario.
Memory matters most on 8 GB laptops, where a background app competes with your browser tabs. If your machine has plenty to spare, this reason may not apply to you.
If your audio has to stay on your computer
These options recognize speech on your device:
- Superwhisper advertises offline transcription, and its free plan includes unlimited use of Whisper models. Its FAQ says offline models run best on Apple silicon Macs. Vokalu vs Superwhisper.
- Vokalu’s Private mode runs a downloaded speech model on your Mac or Windows PC. Plain on-device dictation is free; turning on AI formatting sends text, never audio. Use it everywhere or only in apps you mark private. How Private mode works.
- Handy is free and open source for Windows, macOS and Linux, and transcribes entirely on your computer. It doesn’t clean up filler or format for you, so expect to edit more.
- Windows 11 voice access recognizes speech on the device after setup and also controls the PC. See Microsoft’s guide.
Willow’s homepage also advertises an offline mode that runs on your device.
If you need it on your phone
Here Vokalu is the wrong answer: it has no phone app. Wispr Flow, Aqua Voice and Superwhisper list iOS and Android; Willow lists iPhone, with Android coming soon. If dictating on your phone is part of your day, compare those.
If you only dictate now and then
Try what you already have. Windows has voice typing on Windows key + H. On a Mac, Dictation starts from Edit › Start Dictation or the Dictation shortcut. Both cost nothing. When you notice yourself fixing the same filler and punctuation every time, a dedicated app starts to earn its place.
The short version
| Your reason | Worth trying | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Paying for months you barely use | Vokalu (per minute) | Above about 750 minutes a month, a $15 plan costs less |
| A cheaper flat price | Aqua Voice Pro | Realtime Mode is in the higher Max plan |
| Memory on an 8 GB laptop | Vokalu | Our test covers one machine per platform |
| Audio must stay local | Superwhisper, Vokalu Private mode, Handy | Cleanup may need a connection, or be missing |
| Dictating on your phone | Wispr Flow, Aqua Voice, Superwhisper, Willow (iPhone) | Vokalu has no phone app |
| Occasional sentences | Windows voice typing, Mac Dictation | Cleanup is up to you |
Test the alternative on one real afternoon
Use the same three things in each app: an email reply with a name and a date, a long AI prompt, and a message where you change your mind mid-sentence. Time it from starting to speak until you have text you would actually send, corrections included.
That number tells you more than any feature list, ours included.
