Dictation software without a subscription: four ways to pay

Free built-in tools, one-time licenses, bring-your-own-API-key apps and per-minute billing: what each costs, what you have to set up, and who each one suits.

Most popular dictation apps are subscriptions now: around $10 to $15 a month, or a bit less if you commit to a year. If you dictate every day, that can be fair. If you dictate in bursts, you end up paying for months you barely used.

There are four ways to dictate without a subscription: free built-in tools, a one-time license, an app that uses your own API key, or per-minute billing. They differ less in price than in what you have to set up and maintain. Prices below were checked on each vendor’s site on October 15, 2026.

1. Free, built into your computer

Windows has voice typing on Windows key + H, which needs an internet connection. On a Mac, Dictation starts from Edit › Start Dictation or its shortcut. Both cost nothing.

What you give up is cleanup: you say punctuation out loud or fix it afterwards, and filler words stay in. Our guide to free dictation software for Windows covers voice access and the offline options too.

2. Pay once: a lifetime license

  • VoiceInk lists one-time licenses of $25 for one Mac, $39 for two and $49 for three. It transcribes on your device and is built in public on GitHub. It works only on Apple silicon Macs with macOS 14.4 or later.
  • Superwhisper lists a lifetime option alongside its monthly and yearly Pro plans, and its free plan includes unlimited use of its Whisper models.

A license makes sense if you dictate a lot on one machine and the app runs well on it. Before paying, check what “lifetime” covers, which features need a connection, and whether it runs on every computer you use.

3. Bring your own API key

These apps are free or cheap themselves. You create an account with a speech-to-text provider, paste in your API key, and the provider bills you per minute.

  • Spokenly is free with local models or your own keys, on Mac, Windows, Linux and iPhone. A managed Pro plan costs $9.99 a month if you’d rather not manage keys.
  • DictaType is a Windows app with a $24.99 lifetime license. You pay the provider’s usage on top, which its site estimates at about $0.006 a minute.

Per minute, this is usually the cheapest paid option. The cost is setup and upkeep: a provider account, billing, key security, and that provider’s data-handling terms. If any of that sounds like a chore, it will stay one.

4. Pay per minute, nothing to set up

Vokalu works like a prepaid phone plan for dictation: 1.5¢ per minute for plain dictation, 2¢ per minute with formatting, on Windows and Mac. There is no API key and no provider account to manage. Top-ups start at $2, purchased credit doesn’t expire, and the free plan gives you 25¢ every week until your first purchase. On-device Private mode is free.

An hour of formatted dictation costs $1.20. At 2¢ a minute, 750 minutes a month costs $15, the price of a typical Pro subscription. Below that, per-minute costs less; well above it, a subscription or your own API key will.

Which one fits

Approach Example Up front Ongoing You set up
Built in Windows + H, Mac Dictation Free Free Nothing
One-time license VoiceInk, Superwhisper lifetime $25 and up None, or optional cloud features A model, if it runs locally
Your own API key Spokenly, DictaType Free to $24.99 The provider’s per-minute rate Provider account, key, billing
Per minute Vokalu From $2 prepaid 1.5¢–2¢ per minute Nothing
  • You dictate a few sentences a day: start with the built-in tool.
  • You dictate for hours on one Apple silicon Mac: a one-time license is hard to beat.
  • You’re technical and want the lowest cost per minute: bring your own key.
  • You dictate in bursts, on Windows or Mac, and want nothing to manage: per-minute billing.

Whichever you pick, try it on your real work first: an email reply, a long prompt, and a message where you change your mind halfway through. Work out your monthly cost from a normal week of your own speech minutes.
